A cup of coffee beside a glazed sweet bun

This part of the counter grew out of leftovers. Trimmings from the milk bread became knots, and there were always more egg yolks about than we knew what to do with, which became custard. Both stayed on because people asked for them by name.

Drinks are simple on purpose. One coffee, made two ways, a pot of tea, and a chocolate that is properly thick. There is one small machine and one person behind it, so at half past nine on a Saturday there will be a queue, and we are sorry about that.

Sweet buns that belong to the baked side of the counter, like the custard and red bean, live with the filled buns.

What goes first

Custard tarts are the first sweet thing to go, usually mid morning. Cookies last much longer. We stop making coffee about twenty minutes before closing so the machine can be stripped and cleaned.
